Windows uses letter labels for mounted disks. I still remember having A drive for a floppy disk in my first Windows 95 machine! By default, labels are assigned automatically as you mount devices. I have an external SSD which got the letter D. I set up some programs to use it for storage. Later that week I had to disconnect it. Later still I had mounted an encrypted volume (via Cryptomator) and it got assigned the same label D because at the time it was the next available letter.
